From my own experience, the 90-9-1 rule seems right and makes sense. I don't agree with the study's conclusion though that you can't overcome the participation inequality - at least in some situations. I think Jakob Nielsen is right on with how to improve it but I think the key one is making participation a side effect. Ideally a wiki can become the primary means of communication within a group rather than just something to do for those that feel so inclined. Once it becomes that …

Hmm, in my experience a pattern language means not so much the “syntax” of the individual patterns but the totality of linked and related patterns. Got a cite for your definition?

RSS can play an important role here in notifying people of updates, but you have to get people in the habit of using RSS.

True about RSS.

Email notifications may be a more simplified solution. Subscribe to changes to the agenda page, any new changes made, subscriber would receive a email notification with the latest updates.

Surely the problem with “All Wiki all the time” is not that it's going too fast, but that it's almost certainly going in the wrong direction?

Or is it utterly inconceivable that there might be some situation to which a Wiki is not the best imaginable solution?

Hi Charlie,

The title appears now - I'm tweaking the pages right now so the title appear. Glad you like the new design! It's meant to make the site feel a lot less technical and show how a wiki can look just like a regular web site but have all the editing benefits of a wiki.

I think IBM's jam sessions are a good example. I can't find a great link ( http://www.ibmeye.com/last-day-of-habitat-jam/ ). As I understand it, what they do is have employees around the world (like 100,000+) meet virtually to discuss an overwhelming problem and figure out how to move forward.

Too true that you can't rely on someone to mark an outdated document as obsolete. However, it is also true that people are probably just as likely to not alert anyone to a document that has passed its obsolescence date - and that it is often difficult to put a concrete validity period on anything.

Maybe a distinction needs to be made

Corporate website - fairly static

Intranet site - changes occasionally

Wiki - very frequent changes

As data matures, maybe as a result of a design process (or a refining process) the data becomes complete and can then be made available on more static sites. The wiki being the tool for creation and frequent modification during the design phase

Can the Champion pattern also be an anti-pattern? Fundamental to the wiki concept is that the idea that all users “own” the content in the wiki. By encouraging association of the wiki with a single individual (the Champion), I've found that the users assume the responsibility of the wiki (updates to content, etc.) lay with the wiki champion. In my experience the less visible the wiki Champion is to the users, the more successful the implementation. Has anyone else seen this?

I think this is exceptionally good for a public wiki, it keeps up the transparency of the wiki.

However in a corporate environment i think it may be hard to explain that while I could be an administrator of my space/group and have supreme control over that but only be a member of another that isn't allowed to edit pages. But possibily you could have an in house meeting for this anyway which might make it easier to explain.

I'm not sure if it is offered by any wiki's but heres how I think a great system would work to spread out the load on a public wiki

Not sure about this as a pro-pattern.

Could be called a 'PeerPressure' anti-pattern, or could be expanded on how to best deal with dissent. While using a mass email to incite social peer pressure to knock certain people in line works very well in some cases, there are often less antogonistic ways that could be tried first.

My question in reading this that relates to how better to do it. The key to any wiki is the ability to find what you are looking for. Organizing the wiki by pages, spaces, etc in a logical structure helps users browse through and find content. Without that structure, we are left with a very unorganized mess that relies solely on search to find things which sometimes isn't the way you need to find things.
